October 27, 2009 First Snow

This morning I woke up startled because I couldn't see the alarm clock. I soon realized that power was out and it was 7:20 am (thus meaning the batteries in said clock are expired. We have not lost power in MANY years.) Soon after, Bennett wakes up and I got up to see if I can find a flashlight (once again cursing the kids for playing with them and not leaving them where they are supposed to be.) We finally get Tanner ready for school and find a jacket (buried in the hall closet.) I really wasn't ready to a: wake up to snow and b: not have power.

So I thought I would share a few conversations with my kids this morning.
Matthew: "Mom, the tv is broken."
Mom: "No, we just don't have power and the tv won't work without power."
Matthew: "But I want to watch Ben 10."
Mom: "Look outside Matthew, what do you see?"
Matthew very loud and high pitched: "SNOW!!! I'm going to go get Ady up."
Mom: "Ugh, please let her sleep." Too late he's upstairs screaming at Ady that it snowed. Mom sighs, quietness is over.
Ady: "MOM, IT SNOWED!" anyone that knows Ady, this is not quiet, this is volume 9...she has 3 noise levels....sleep, volume 9 and volume 3 (on very small occasions) Ady rushing downstairs to find her coat. "MATTHEW let's get dressed and play in the snow."
Mom: "I don't think so, it is cold outside and we don't have power."
doorbell rings (my friend's first day back to the outside job market today and I have her kindergartner for the morning until school starts.) Ship Tanner off with neighbor and son and settle in to try to make breakfast....looks like cereal by moonlight. LOL
Two bites into the cereal Matt says, "Mom, can I watch Ben 10 after breakfast?"
Mom: "Not sure Matt, there is no power."
LIGHTS FLICKER ON....OFF AGAIN
Matt: "Mom, we have power can I watch Ben 10?"
Mom: "No, Matt, the power is off again." I then realize all the lights came on, so I proceed to walk around house turning switches to off.
Kids no longer want to eat and run off to play in dark that is getting gradually lighter.
3 minutes later Matt: "Can I watch Diego instead of Ben 10?"
Mom: "No, power is still out."
Matthew: "I am hungry can I have fruit snacks."
Mom, noticing Matt ate no cereal, "No, fruit snacks aren't for breakfast, you didn't eat your cereal."
Matt's 1st temper tanturm of the day. Mom walks off to fold laundry in her room with the little light she has.
Matt comes up stairs a few minutes later. "Can I watch Dora?"
Mom: "No, power is still out, why don't you go play with the girls."
Matt 2nd tantrum because now I won't let him watch tv. Mom sighs.
Lights Flicker ON....stay on....mom counts to three.....lights OUT...Mom sighs, notices all lights are on AGAIN....proceeds to turn lights off again. Tells girls stop turning lights on, power is out.
Matt: "Mom, the lights were on can I watch Ben 10."
Mom seriously ready to lose it at this point, grabs Matt, puts him on the other side of the bedroom door, closes door and hears tantrum #3. Dad steps in.
10 minutes later Lights flicker (it's about 9:30 or so) Mom and Dad count to 10, lights still on, Mom goes to turn Ben 10 on. Matt at this point has found Tanner's headphones and MP3 player.......no longer wants to watch tv. Mom also notices ALL lights on AGAIN....proceeds to turn lights OFF again.
And where is Ady all this time you say? She is quietly yes ADY is quietly playing with her friend and the awesome magnetic paperdolls grandma bought last week. YAY!!!!!!!!
