Bad Genes....BAD!!!

I have awful genes when it come to eyes. I am pretty much blind and have been for a long time. I still remember getting glasses in 1st grade but refusing to wear them. It was a self image issue I struggled with for a long time. Though I do remember the first time I out glasses on and walked outside. I said, "Wow, there are mountains." I still to this day appreciate seeing mountains. I am grateful to be able to see and that we have the technology to be able to. I had some hideous glasses in my growing up years (i will refrain from adding any pictures.) So I prayed often that my children wouldn't have to go through the heart ache I had in wearing glasses. I remember being teased and just crying. I even remember starting 7th grade. It was a new school, I had just moved and I was struggling with my self image. I refused to wear my glasses, so I would sit as close to the front as possible, grab my glasses out of my bag hurry to put them on and sneak a peak at the board and take them off. This resulted in many horrible headaches and a heavy backpack (I couldn't see the numbers on my locker so I didn't use it.) It was awful. My Mom finally took pity on my and got me contacts...YAY!!!!!! Oh the stories I could tell. So, when Tanner was in kindergarten I took him to get his eyes tested and the optimologist said, "He has perfect vision, why did you bring him in?" UH, to make sure. LOL So when I got a call from Tanner's 3rd grade teacher saying they he was squinting during the vision test, my heart sank. I kept telling myself he's a squinter, he'll be fine. I got the courage up and took him in. GLASSES!?!?! I was so sad to think that my baby boy needed glasses. He went to pick out his glasses and tried many on. He finally settled on this pair. I of-course didn't love them, I wanted him to get the thin wire ones that barely showed up, but No, this is what he liked. With a big smile on his face he turned to me and said, "Mom, I like them, but how do YOU think I look?" With a tear in my heart and a smile on my face I said, "You look awesome Tanner! I am so proud of you." He does look awesome, but then again I am his mom. I am so nervous to see how others react to his glasses and I silently pray that people will be kind. He is off track, so he doesn't have to go to school for 3 weeks and I hope he gets used to them by then. I also hope that the kids at school are kind. I'm especially worried about pictures this weekend with Davis' family. Sometimes family isn't very tactful and I am just anxiously hoping no one will make any snide remarks.

On a side note. Tanner is an awesome kid. He got himself a hamster today. He's been saving his money for months now and we keep putting it off. I told him he had to wait until he got off-track, so he could take care of it and get used to it. We are also going to be moving Bennett into his room in a few days in hopes of them both adjusting before Tanner goes back to school. Bennett has been sick with a cold so he is cranky. I am very nervous about this change. Tanner also was a huge helper today. I am exhausted. Bennett hasn't been sleeping well, so I haven't been sleeping well. Tanner got up this morning and got Ady and Matt breakfast. He even got them lunch when we got home and I was upstairs nursing Bennett in hopes of him taking a nap. He is growing up so fast and is such an awesome kiddo. I am so grateful to have him apart of our family. LOVE YOU TAN MAN

I like the glasses as well! I got glasses in the 4th grade and had them until 8th grade. Then I got contacts and have been a contact wearer ever since. I can totally sympathize with being blind! ha ha! It's all good! I keep waiting for one of my kids to need glasses but so far so good. Both Sam and I have terrible eye sight so it's inevitable I guess...

The nice thing is at that age they think glasses are cool. Nathan tries mine on all the time. He looks very stylish. Nathan is looking forward to having Tanner come to play tomorrow morning.

And I could'nt resist commenting!
I could of written this blog MANY years ago....
Same first born male kidlet...and black glasses he thought were great..
Seven years ago we took the family to Hawaii for nearly two weeks....Bret was wearing his glasses in the ocean and a HUGE wave came up.....and the glasses went to sea with the huge wave!!!
I was as sympathetic as I could be...but secretly, I was so glad his glasses were gone!

I think Tanner is a cutie though....
Oh...the wobnderful joys of motherhood!
It's the best!
